The player takes the role of a namable Hero. The Hero's name has an effect on his statistical growth over the course of the game. Battles are fought in a turn-based format and experience points and gold are awarded after every battle, allowing the Hero to level-up in ability and allows them to buy better weapons, armor, and items. Progression consists of traveling over an overworld map and through dungeons, fighting monsters encountered via random battles along the journey.
Kit's verdict · 6.6/10
Historically huge, but today it's a slow one-person grind with very little to break up the walking.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Simple, approachable RPG design
- Akira Toriyama's charming monsters
- Koichi Sugiyama's grand music
Not so much
- Heavy grinding is required
- Just one character and one-on-one fights
Play it if history buffs and fans of the series.
Skip it if anyone with little patience for grinding.

Dragon Quest doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Stay near Tantegel and level up before crossing any bridge, since monsters get stronger past each one.
- Spend early gold on the best weapon you can afford before armour; faster kills mean less healing.
- Learn Heal by level 3 and Hurt by level 4, and save MP for healing.
- Kill Metal Slimes whenever you can; they give huge experience but flee fast.
- Carry Torches or learn Radiant before entering caves.
- Combine the Stones of Sunlight, the Staff of Rain and Erdrick's Token to make the Rainbow Drop and bridge to the Dragonlord's island.
