FromSoftware took its brutal Souls formula out of the corridors and dropped it into a vast open world called the Lands Between. You can ride anywhere, fight anything and come back later when a boss crushes you. It turned a cult genre into a mainstream phenomenon.

The open world finally got a sense of awe back, and it hits like a truck.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Genuine discovery around every corner
- Huge build and weapon variety
- Some of the best boss design ever made
Not so much
- Late-game bosses lean on punishing delayed attacks
- Reused minor bosses in the catacombs
Play it if players who love being lost, beaten down and then finally winning on their own terms.
Skip it if anyone who wants clear quest markers or hates dying fifty times to one boss.

Tips
Play it better
- Rest at three Sites of Grace early and Melina appears to give you Torrent, your spectral horse with a double jump.
- Once you have Torrent, return to the Church of Elleh at night to meet Renna, who gives you the Spirit Calling Bell for summoning spirit ashes.
- Grab the Flask of Wondrous Physick at the Third Church of Marika in north-east Limgrave; it's a free, reusable buff slot.
- Golden Seeds add flask charges and Sacred Tears make each sip heal more, so hunt for golden saplings and churches.
- If Margit walls you, go explore Weeping Peninsula and level up, or buy Margit's Shackle from Patches in Murkwater Cave to pin him down twice.
- Jumping heavy attacks break enemy posture fast, and a guard counter right after blocking is one of the safest damage tools in the game.
- Put early levels into Vigor; almost every death in the first 30 hours is a one-shot you could have survived.
