Commander Keen's very first adventure, and the debut of id's groundbreaking side-scrolling technology. In the game you play the role of Commander Keen: the alter-ego of an eight year-old genius by the name of Billy Blaze. When Billy learns that the Earth is in danger, he dons his brother's football helmet and his homemade interstellar spaceship to become Commander Keen -- Defender of the Earth!
Kit's verdict · 7.8/10
A charming and important milestone, though its slippery physics are an acquired taste.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Smooth scrolling that rivalled consoles in 1990
- Fun pogo-stick movement
- Lots of humour and hidden secrets
Not so much
- Slippery, floaty controls
- Limited raygun ammo can feel stingy
Play it if retro fans, platformer lovers and anyone curious about id Software's roots.
Skip it if players used to tight, responsive modern platformers.

Tips
Play it better
- Ctrl jumps, Alt uses the pogo stick and pressing both fires the raygun. Remap them if it's awkward.
- Turn on two-button firing in the options to make shooting easier.
- The pogo stick isn't available from the start. Find it early in the game and it opens up higher platforms.
- Yorps can't hurt you. Shoot them to stun them or jump on their heads, but they'll push you into hazards.
- Gargs charge when they see you. Jump over them or shoot them before they line up with you.
- Raygun charges are limited, so pick up every ammo pack and don't waste shots on Yorps.
- Save on the overworld map between levels. You can't save inside a level.
