A 2D platformer and first entry on the SNES in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario World follows Mario as he attempts to defeat Bowser's underlings and rescue Princess Peach from his clutches. The game features a save system, a less linear world map, an expanded movement arsenal and numerous new items for Mario, alongside new approaches to level design and art direction.

Loved
- Cape flight opens up every level
- Dozens of secret exits reward curiosity
- Yoshi adds a whole new layer of play
Not so much
- Bosses are mostly simple Koopaling rehashes
- Cape flying can trivialise some stages
Play it if anyone who wants the purest, most generous 2D Mario ever made.
Skip it if players who need a story or modern checkpoints everywhere.
Cheats & codes
No cheat codes
Super Mario World doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Hit the four Switch Palaces early; they turn dotted outline blocks solid and make later levels much safer.
- With the cape, run until Mario's arms spread, jump, then press back to climb and forward to dive; rocking left and right lets you glide almost forever.
- A level with a red dot on the map has a second, secret exit, usually behind a key and keyhole.
- Spin jump with A to bounce off enemies and spiky things you can't normally stomp.
- Feed Yoshi coloured shells: blue lets him fly, red makes him spit fire, yellow makes him stomp the ground.
- Press Start then Select on any level you've already beaten to leave it instantly, which is great for farming lives.

- Shigeru Miyamoto has said he wanted Mario to ride a dinosaur since the NES era, but the hardware couldn't manage it.
- Koji Kondo built nearly the whole soundtrack from variations on one main melody.
- The 96 exits are counted on the save file, which is why players chase the star next to it.
