Tips & secrets
About the game

Mario crosses eight themed worlds on a map screen, with suits that let him fly, swim and turn to stone. It is the peak of 8-bit platforming and one of the best-selling cartridges ever.

Kit's verdict · 9.7/10Nearly perfect: dense with ideas, generous with secrets, and still the gold standard for 2D Mario. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Huge variety of worlds and power-ups
  • Overworld maps with items and mini-games
  • Tight, precise controls

Not so much

  • No saving in the original NES release
  • World 8 difficulty spikes hard

Play it if anyone who loves platformers, full stop.

Skip it if people who can't stand losing progress when they turn the console off.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Super Mario Bros. 3 doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Save the P-Wing and Warp Whistles in your item box for the hardest stages instead of using them early.
  2. Run on a flat stretch to fill the P meter, then jump with the Raccoon tail to fly over whole sections.
  3. The N-Spade card-matching game uses a small set of fixed layouts, so memorise them for free items and lives.
  4. Toad Houses give an item every time; Hammer Bros on the map drop items like the Hammer Suit or Music Box.
  5. The Tanooki Suit lets you turn into an invincible statue by holding down and pressing B.
  6. On airships, keep moving; standing still is how cannons and bolts get you.
