Tips & secrets
About the game

Link must wake a sleeping Princess Zelda by clearing six palaces. This sequel swaps the top-down view for side-scrolling sword fights, RPG levelling and towns.

Kit's verdict · 7.4/10Ambitious and misunderstood, with sharp sword combat buried under brutal difficulty and cryptic towns. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Deep, skill-based sword fighting
  • Spells and levelling add strategy
  • Great palace music

Not so much

  • Game overs send you all the way back to the start
  • Many vague hints and hidden requirements

Play it if hardcore players who love a tough action RPG and don't mind grinding.

Skip it if zelda fans expecting the original's top-down exploration.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Level Attack first; killing things faster is the best defence in this game.
  2. Learn the Downward Thrust in Mido and the Upward Thrust in Darunia, since some enemies and areas need them.
  3. Ironknuckles and Darknuts block by matching your shield height; feint with a crouch then a high stab.
  4. Use the Shield spell before boss fights and Fairy to fly past broken bridges or locked doors.
  5. Collect Point bags to level up, and red jars to refill magic.
  6. The Hammer from Death Mountain breaks rocks blocking the southern path.
