Alucard, Dracula's son, explores a sprawling castle that opens up as he finds new powers and gear. It defined the 'Metroidvania' style alongside Super Metroid and remains one of the best 2D games ever made.
Kit's verdict · 9.5/10
A gothic masterpiece with a twist that doubles the game, and still one of 2D's high points.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- A huge, interconnected castle
- Tons of weapons, spells and familiars
- Gorgeous sprite work and music
Not so much
- Easy once you're overpowered
- Some voice acting is famously cheesy
Play it if anyone who loves exploring, backtracking and finding hidden rooms.
Skip it if players who want a linear action game.

Tips
Play it better
- Check the map often: the percentage tells you how much castle you've explored.
- In the late game, the Shield Rod combined with the Alucard Shield is a famously overpowered combo.
- Learn spells by entering button combos; Soul Steal and Hellfire are big helps.
- Use familiars like the Faerie, which can revive you and cure status ailments.
- Hit suspicious walls; many hide food and secret passages.
- Back-dash to move quickly and dodge attacks.
