Tips & secrets
About the game

Nintendo's mascots knock each other off floating stages in a fighter where damage makes you fly further instead of draining a health bar. It launched one of the biggest fighting series ever.

Kit's verdict · 8.2/10Thin next to its sequels, but the core idea was perfect from day one. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Brilliant, easy-to-learn concept
  • Four-player chaos
  • Nintendo fan service done right

Not so much

  • Only 12 fighters and nine stages
  • Single-player content runs out fast

Play it if anyone who wants a fighting game friends can enjoy on their first try.

Skip it if players who want the depth and huge roster of the later entries.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Super Smash Bros. doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Your up-special is your recovery move, so save it for getting back to the ledge after being knocked off.
  2. Grab the ledge instead of landing on stage when the opponent is waiting for you there.
  3. Smash attacks come from tilting the stick hard and pressing A at the same time; charge them only when the target is stuck.
  4. Press Z to shield, and press Z with A to grab; grabs beat shields.
  5. Fox's blaster and Pikachu's thunder jolt are great for chipping damage from a distance.
  6. The higher your percentage, the further you fly, so play safe once you pass 100%.
  7. The Home-Run Bat's smash attack is a near-instant kill, so grab it before your opponent does.
