Simon Belmont storms Dracula's castle again, this time with a whip he can crack in eight directions. Its gothic mood, music and Mode 7 tricks made it one of the early SNES's best showpieces.

Loved
- Eight-way whip finally frees up Simon
- Brooding, beautiful stages
- A superb soundtrack
Not so much
- Easier than its NES predecessors
- Slowdown when the screen gets busy
Play it if anyone who wants classic Castlevania without the stiff controls.
Skip it if players who prefer the open, exploratory Castlevanias like Symphony of the Night.
Cheats & codes

Super Castlevania IV doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Hold the whip button after attacking and Simon dangles the whip, which blocks small projectiles and hits nearby enemies.
- Whip upward and diagonally to clear bats and Medusa heads before they reach you.
- Whip the metal rings to swing across gaps; swinging also lets you change your momentum mid-air.
- Holy Water and the Cross are the strongest sub-weapons for bosses, so avoid picking up others by accident.
- You can steer Simon in mid-jump, unlike the NES games, so use it to correct risky leaps.
