Bounty hunter Samus Aran explores the alien planet Zebes, gathering upgrades that open new paths. It founded half of the 'Metroidvania' genre and its ending was a landmark moment for women in games.
Kit's verdict · 7.6/10
A brave, lonely, groundbreaking game that is genuinely hard to enjoy today without a map.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Atmosphere that still feels eerie
- Upgrades that change how you explore
- Brilliant, moody soundtrack
Not so much
- No in-game map and lots of identical rooms
- Restarting with only 30 energy is brutal
Play it if patient explorers and anyone who wants to see the roots of Super Metroid and Hollow Knight.
Skip it if players who hate grinding health back or getting lost.

Tips
Play it better
- Go left from the start to grab the Morph Ball right away; most players miss it.
- Freeze enemies with the Ice Beam and use them as platforms to reach high ledges.
- Fire bombs or shots at walls and floors constantly, since many paths are hidden behind destructible blocks.
- Find the Varia Suit early in Brinstar; it halves damage and makes Norfair survivable.
- Metroids can only be killed by freezing them with the Ice Beam and hitting them with five missiles.
- Farm the respawning enemies from pipes near doorways to refill energy after a continue.
