Eastern European war veteran Niko Bellic arrives in Liberty City chasing the American dream and finds the same violence he left behind. Rockstar swapped the cartoon excess of earlier games for grit, weight and a far more serious story. Its version of New York is still astonishingly dense.
Kit's verdict · 8.7/10
The most grounded GTA, with its best-written lead, slightly weighed down by heavy handling and constant phone calls.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Niko is a great, sad, funny protagonist
- Liberty City feels truly alive
- Euphoria physics make every crash and fall unique
Not so much
- Friends ring you for hangouts far too often
- Cars handle like boats until you adjust
Play it if players who want a darker, more serious crime story in a city that feels real.
Skip it if anyone looking for GTA's goofier, jetpack-and-tanks side.

Tips
Play it better
- Keep your friends happy: high-like friends unlock perks, such as Little Jacob selling guns from his car and Brucie lending you a helicopter.
- Use cover constantly; Niko dies fast in the open, and blind-firing from cover is safer than you'd think.
- To lose the police, get outside the flashing search circle and stay out of officers' sight lines.
- Hail a taxi and skip the ride to cross the city in seconds for a few dollars.
- Brake early and ease into turns; the heavy car physics punish GTA-style handbrake spam.
- Retry checkpoints mean you can often go straight back to a failed mission by text message instead of driving across town.
