A silent criminal named Claude is betrayed and left for dead, then works for every mob in Liberty City to get even. It's the game that took GTA into 3D and invented the modern open-world template.

History-making, but rough around the edges next to everything it inspired.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- The open-world blueprint everyone copied
- Liberty City feels alive and dangerous
- Great talk radio and mob storytelling
Not so much
- Silent hero gives the story little heart
- No checkpoints and stiff combat make missions brutal
Play it if anyone curious about where the modern sandbox began.
Skip it if players spoiled by later GTAs' controls and polish.

Tips
Play it better
- Clear the Paramedic side job to level 12 for unlimited sprinting.
- Clear the Firefighter side job to get a flamethrower at your safehouse.
- Stock up on armor before every gunfight, since health drains fast and there are no mid-mission checkpoints.
- Use the Pay 'n' Spray to wipe your wanted level and fix up a damaged car.
- Steal a sturdy car like a Patriot for mission chases, because weak sedans fall apart quickly.
