Tips & secrets
About the game

A small RPG where a child falls into a world of monsters and you don't have to kill anyone. Fights mix bullet-hell dodging with conversation, and the game remembers every choice you make, sometimes across saves.

Kit's verdict · 9.2/10Simple-looking, deeply clever, and funnier and sadder than it has any right to be. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Every fight can end peacefully
  • Brilliant, memorable soundtrack
  • Writing that is warm, weird and very funny

Not so much

  • Basic visuals put some people off
  • Short, and most of its power comes from replays

Play it if players who love quirky writing, great music and games that play with the idea of being a game.

Skip it if RPG fans looking for deep stats, loot and a long grind.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Undertale doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Use ACT to learn what each monster wants. When its name turns yellow, choose MERCY to spare it.
  2. Blue attacks only hurt you if you move through them, so stand still. Orange attacks only hurt if you stay still, so keep moving.
  3. Your soul's color changes in some fights, which changes how you move. Read the mood of the fight before panicking.
  4. Save at every glowing star point. Some saves matter more than you think.
  5. Monster Candy in the Ruins and cheap items from shops are enough to carry a careful player through.
  6. Your first full run decides a lot, so play it however feels natural to you.

Trivia

  • Toby Fox raised about $51,000 on Kickstarter in 2013, against a $5,000 goal.
  • Fox was already known for an EarthBound ROM hack, and the track Megalovania first appeared in that hack before it was reused here.
  • Apart from some art help, Fox wrote, designed and composed almost all of it himself.
  • Its follow-up, Deltarune, began releasing chapters in 2018.
