A prisoner gets caught up in a plot to open gates to a hellish realm across the province of Cyrodiil. Its huge open world and side quests made it a landmark of the HD era, even if its systems are famously wonky.
Kit's verdict · 8.8/10
Gorgeous, goofy and endlessly charming, with the best guild quests Bethesda ever wrote.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Superb guild questlines, especially the Dark Brotherhood
- A lush world packed with things to find
- Huge freedom in how you build a character
Not so much
- Enemies level with you, so leveling can make you weaker
- Repetitive Oblivion gates
Play it if anyone who wants to get lost in a fantasy world for a hundred hours.
Skip it if players who want tight combat or a focused story.

Tips
Play it better
- Monsters scale with your level, so choose major skills you won't use constantly or you'll level up too fast and fall behind.
- Join the Mages Guild and get recommendations from every town to reach the Arcane University, where you can make your own spells.
- Sneak attacks deal heavy bonus damage, so a stealthy bow or dagger build is strong early.
- In the persuasion minigame, pick the topic the person likes most when the wedge is biggest, and the one they hate when it's smallest.
- Buy or steal a horse early. Fast travel only works to places you've already found.
