A new region, Johto, 100 new Pokémon and a real-time clock that brings day and night. It refined everything Red and Blue did and then hid a whole second game inside the cartridge.
Kit's verdict · 9.3/10
The best sequel the series ever made, with a post-game twist that still floors people.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Day/night cycle and weekly events
- Breeding, shinies and held items added
- Two regions in one cartridge
Not so much
- Wild Pokémon levels are low and leveling drags
- Few of the new Pokémon show up before the late game
Play it if anyone who loved Red and Blue and wants more of everything.
Skip it if players who hate grinding a team up for the final fights.

Tips
Play it better
- Whitney's Miltank in Goldenrod is the famous wall; trade for the Machop offered in a Goldenrod house and bring Rock or Fighting moves.
- The Bug-Catching Contest in National Park runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and it's a great way to get Scyther or Pinsir early.
- Give your Pokémon to Kurt with Apricorns and he'll craft special Poké Balls like the Fast Ball and Lure Ball.
- Different Pokémon appear in the morning, day and night, so check routes at different times.
- Visit the Day-Care on Route 34 to start breeding for better moves and stats.
- Hold the Exp. Share or rotate team members, because the late game's level curve is steep.

Trivia
- Satoru Iwata, then at HAL Laboratory, helped compress the game's code so the whole Kanto region could fit in.
- It introduced shiny Pokémon, breeding, held items, two new types (Dark and Steel) and the gender split.
- Early builds were shown at Nintendo Space World 1997, and a leaked demo surfaced online in 2018.
- The Game Boy Color cart had an internal clock powered by a battery, which is why old copies lose their time setting.
