Tips & secrets
About the game

The enhanced third take on Ruby and Sapphire, set in the island-heavy Hoenn region. It added the Battle Frontier, a reworked story and animated sprites, and many fans call it the peak of the Game Boy era.

Kit's verdict · 8.7/10The definitive Hoenn experience and a post-game that never ends. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • The Battle Frontier is endless
  • Gorgeous GBA sprite work
  • Double battles add real tactics

Not so much

  • Way too much water in the back half
  • Missing many older Pokémon without trading

Play it if anyone who wants the deepest single-player Pokémon of its era.

Skip it if players who hate Surf-heavy exploration.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Pokémon Emerald doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Mudkip is the easy-mode pick, because Marshtomp's Ground typing walls Wattson and many later fights.
  2. Use the PokéNav's Match Call to rematch Gym Leaders and trainers for good experience and money.
  3. Feebas only appears on six random fishing tiles along Route 119; fish every water tile with an Old Rod until it bites.
  4. Bring Water or Ground moves for Flannery's Fire Gym and Electric resistance for Wattson.
  5. The Battle Frontier uses level-50 or open-level rules, so build a separate team for it rather than using your story squad.
  6. Some trainers appear in pairs and force double battles, so lead with Pokémon that have spread moves like Surf.
