The series' DS debut takes you through the snowy, mountainous Sinnoh region. It split moves into physical and special and added online trading, reshaping competitive Pokémon for good.
Kit's verdict · 8.0/10
A huge leap for battling, held back by sluggish pacing and a thin Pokédex early on.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Physical/special split fixes old balance problems
- Online trading and the GTS
- The Underground is a great time sink
Not so much
- Slow battle animations and Surf speed
- Few Fire types before the late game
Play it if players who care about team building and competitive depth.
Skip it if anyone who wants a snappy pace; Platinum fixes a lot of this.
Cheats & codes

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Chimchar makes Gardenia and later Gyms much easier, since Fire types are rare in Sinnoh.
- Slather Honey on golden trees and come back hours later to find Pokémon you can't get elsewhere, including Munchlax.
- Put a Game Boy Advance Pokémon game in the DS's second slot to make certain older Pokémon appear in the wild.
- Grab the Pokétch apps; the Dowsing Machine finds hidden items and the Day-Care checker saves walking.
- Cynthia's Garchomp is a beast, so bring an Ice-type move or two to the Champion fight.
- Talk to people in the Underground and hide spheres to build up your base and dig up fossils.
