About the game

A grand strategy game running from 1444 to 1821, where you take any nation on Earth and steer its trade, wars, colonies and diplomacy. It's the deepest historical strategy game on PC, and one of the hardest to master.

Kit's verdict · 8.4/10Four centuries of history in your hands, as long as you bring patience and a wiki. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Play literally any nation in the world
  • Deep trade, diplomacy and colonisation
  • Wild alternate-history outcomes

Not so much

  • Brutal learning curve with poor tutorials
  • Over a decade of DLC makes the full game very expensive

Play it if history buffs who love deep, interlocking systems.

Skip it if anyone who wants quick sessions or clear goals.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Start as Portugal or Castile; both are safe and teach exploration and colonies.
  2. Watch Aggressive Expansion when you take land, or neighbours will form a coalition against you.
  3. Ally with a strong neighbour's rival; the enemy of your enemy is your best defence.
  4. Don't fall behind in military technology, as one tech gap can lose a war.
  5. Steer trade toward your home node with merchants; trade nodes decide where money flows.
  6. Avoid loans you can't repay, because bankruptcy wrecks your nation for years.
