Tips & secrets
About the game

Three houses battle for control of the spice on the desert planet Arrakis. Dune II established the modern real-time strategy formula of harvesting, base-building and unit production.

Kit's verdict · 7.5/10The grandfather of RTS games, but its controls are a real chore today. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Defined the whole RTS genre
  • Three houses with unique super units
  • Sandworms add memorable chaos

Not so much

  • You can only select one unit at a time
  • Slow, clunky pace by modern standards

Play it if strategy history buffs and fans of Dune.

Skip it if anyone used to drag-selecting armies.

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Lay concrete slabs before placing buildings. Buildings on bare rock decay and lose health over time.
  2. Protect your harvesters. Losing them kills your economy fast.
  3. Sandworms swallow units on sand. Keep troops on rock whenever possible.
  4. Build a Starport to buy units cheaply. Prices change over time, so buy when they're low.
  5. Build turrets and rocket turrets around your refinery and construction yard.
  6. Repair units at the Repair Facility rather than building new ones.
