About the game

Age of Mythology takes the Age of Empires formula into Greek, Egyptian and Norse myth, with god powers and monsters like Cyclopes and Minotaurs. It's a remake favourite, re-released in 2024 as Retold.

Kit's verdict · 8.9/10The Age game with the most personality, where your army can include a Kraken and a Hydra. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Gods and myth units add huge flair
  • Excellent Fall of the Trident campaign
  • Fantastic cheat codes

Not so much

  • Fewer civs than Age of Empires II
  • Some balance swings wildly between gods

Play it if anyone who likes RTS games and Greek myths.

Skip it if players who want historical realism.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Pick your major god for their god powers and myth units, not just their looks: Zeus is a strong beginner pick.
  2. Greek players earn favor by praying at temples, Egyptians by building monuments and Norse by fighting.
  3. Save your god powers for big fights, since most can only be used once.
  4. Heroes hard-counter myth units, so keep a few around once enemy monsters appear.
  5. Egyptian buildings are free but slow, so stack Pharaoh empowerment on key builders.
