You fly a jet up a winding river, shooting ships, helicopters and bridges while watching your fuel. Its endless course was generated by a formula, a clever trick for squeezing a big world into a tiny cartridge.

River Raid doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Fly over fuel depots to refuel, and only shoot them when your tank is already full, since that earns points but destroys the fuel.
- Bridges mark sections, and destroying one acts as a checkpoint if you lose a life.
- Push forward to speed up and pull back to slow down, which helps thread narrow channels.
- Watch the fuel gauge constantly, because running dry kills you just like a crash.
- Helicopters and ships drift sideways into your path, so shoot them before they line up with you.
- The river narrows over time, so slow down near tight sections rather than braking late.

- River Raid II came out in 1988 without Shaw's involvement.
