A lone space marine blasts through demon-infested moon bases and Hell itself in id Software's breakneck first-person shooter. It took the genre Wolfenstein 3D invented and made it fast, violent, moddable and networked, and PC gaming has never been the same.
Kit's verdict · 9.6/10
Thirty years on it still moves faster and hits harder than most of the shooters it inspired.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Lightning-fast movement and perfectly weighted weapons
- Brilliant, non-linear level design full of secrets
- Endless replay value thanks to mods and fan maps
Not so much
- No looking up or down, so aiming is automatic
- Episode 3 and the later Ultimate Doom levels get mazy
Play it if anyone who wants pure, fast, skill-based shooting with zero cutscenes in the way.
Skip it if players who need a story, modern aiming or hand-holding objective markers.

Tips
Play it better
- Let monsters fight each other. If an Imp's fireball hits a Baron, they will brawl, so stand where enemies shoot through each other.
- The shotgun is your best friend for most of Episode 1. Fire from just outside an Imp's reach and the pellets do full damage.
- Strafe-run diagonally. Holding forward and strafe together moves you faster than running straight, which is how speedrunners cross big rooms.
- Rocket splash hurts you too. Never fire the rocket launcher at a monster standing right next to you.
- The Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind take no splash damage from rockets, so you must hit them directly.
- Firing a gun wakes up every monster that can hear it. Punch or chainsaw quietly when you want to pick off rooms one by one.
- A berserk pack makes your fists stronger for the rest of the level, and it can one-punch Imps and Zombies.
- Use the automap (Tab) constantly. Odd gaps between rooms almost always hide secret areas.
