About the game

A soldier leaps through slipgates into a dark, Lovecraftian dimension of medieval castles, monsters and runes. Quake brought true 3D worlds, mouse-look and internet multiplayer to the mainstream.

Kit's verdict · 9.1/10The moodiest id game and the birthplace of modern online shooters. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Loved

  • Real 3D levels with brilliant movement and rocket jumping
  • Oppressive atmosphere and Trent Reznor's eerie soundtrack
  • Spawned online deathmatch culture and countless mods

Not so much

  • Brown-on-brown visuals feel drab
  • The four episodes have no real story connecting them

Play it if shooter fans who love movement skill and gothic horror atmosphere.

Skip it if players who want colour, story or variety in enemies and settings.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Turn on mouse-look (or type +mlook in the console in the original DOS version). Quake was built for it.
  2. Rocket jumping: look down, jump and fire a rocket at your feet to launch yourself to high ledges. It costs health, so watch your armor.
  3. Shamblers take only half damage from explosives, so use the nailguns or the Thunderbolt on them.
  4. Don't fire the Thunderbolt (lightning gun) while underwater. It discharges all your cells and probably kills you.
  5. Fiends leap at you from range. Sidestep when they jump and they'll sail past.
  6. Grenades bounce, so lob them around corners and down stairs at Ogres and Death Knights.
  7. Vore homing balls can be dodged by putting pillars or doors between you and the ball.

Trivia

  • Quake's QuakeC scripting language let fans build total mods, including the original Team Fortress.
  • QuakeWorld, released in late 1996, added client-side prediction that made internet play smooth on dial-up.
  • It was id's last game with John Romero, who left soon after release.
  • The game was originally planned as a melee-focused fantasy RPG starring a hammer-wielding hero called Quake.
