Mario Kart's Wii outing added bikes, tricks, 12-racer grids and online play, and came with the plastic Wii Wheel. It's chaotic, item-heavy and built for the living room. It became the best-selling racing game ever made at the time.
Kit's verdict · 8.3/10
Gloriously chaotic party racing, even if bikes and items make skill feel optional at times.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Great track list, including fan-favourite retro courses
- Wii Wheel makes it accessible to anyone
- Online play was a huge draw
Not so much
- Twelve racers means brutal item spam
- Inside-drift bikes dominate competitive play
Play it if families, friends and anyone who wants loud, funny racing nights.
Skip it if racers who hate losing to a last-second blue shell.
Cheats & codes
No cheat codes
Mario Kart Wii doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Use manual drift and hold it through turns until the sparks turn orange for a mini-turbo boost.
- Bikes can pop wheelies on straights for extra speed, but you can be bumped out of one easily.
- Shake the remote or flick the stick when leaving a ramp to do a trick and gain a speed boost on landing.
- Hold a shell or banana behind you to block incoming red shells.
- Inside-drifting bikes, like the Mach Bike or Flame Runner, take tighter racing lines and are the competitive favourites.
- A GameCube or Classic Controller gives you more precise control than the Wii Wheel.
