Mario Kart's leap into 3D added four-player split-screen, huge tracks and the infamous blue shell. It became the default party game of the N64 era.
Kit's verdict · 8.0/10
The rubber-banding is brutal, but four friends and Battle Mode still make it a riot.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Four-player split-screen is chaos in the best way
- Battle Mode arenas are classics
- Memorable tracks like Rainbow Road and Wario Stadium
Not so much
- Computer drivers cheat to catch up
- Some tracks are long and empty
Play it if anyone with three friends, a couch and a free evening.
Skip it if solo players who hate getting robbed by items in the last lap.
Cheats & codes
No cheat codes
Mario Kart 64 doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Time your accelerate press just as the second start light comes on to get a rocket start.
- During a power slide, waggle the stick against the turn until the smoke changes colour, then let go for a mini-turbo.
- Hold Z to drag a shell or banana behind you, where it blocks incoming red shells.
- Light drivers like Toad, Peach and Yoshi accelerate fastest; Bowser, DK and Wario have higher top speed and knock others aside.
- On Wario Stadium, a well-timed hop over the wall near the start skips most of the lap.
- On Rainbow Road, dropping off the edge at the right point lands you on the track below and cuts a big chunk of the course.
- Save mushrooms for shortcuts through dirt or for blasting past a pack, not for straight lines.
