Wisecracking action hero Duke Nukem fights an alien invasion through Los Angeles, an orbiting space station and the Moon. Its interactive, real-world levels and outrageous attitude made it DOOM's biggest rival.
Kit's verdict · 8.9/10
Crude, loud and gloriously inventive, with levels you can still poke at for hours.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Interactive world full of switches, mirrors, toilets and jokes
- Creative weapons like the shrinker, freezer and pipe bombs
- Great secrets and destructible scenery
Not so much
- The humour and content are very much of 1996
- Later levels get mazy and keycard-heavy
Play it if players who want a fast shooter with personality and a world that reacts to everything you touch.
Skip it if anyone put off by juvenile, adult-oriented humour.

Tips
Play it better
- Pipe bombs are remote-detonated. Throw one, walk away, and press fire again to blow it up when enemies gather.
- Shrink an enemy with the shrinker and then walk over it to squash it, which saves ammo on big Assault Commanders.
- Freeze an enemy with the freezethrower, then kick it to shatter it.
- The Holoduke throws out a fake Duke that distracts enemies while you flank them.
- Drink from fountains, sinks and broken fire hydrants, and use toilets, to top up a little health.
- Laser tripbombs can be stuck to walls in doorways to set traps for pursuing aliens.
- Use the jetpack to reach rooftops and ledges, which is where many secrets hide.
- Crouch and look up and down freely. Unlike DOOM, many secrets sit above or below your line of sight.
