Tips & secrets
About the game

A tiny triangle ship spins, thrusts and shoots rocks that split into smaller rocks, while flying saucers hunt you. Its glowing vector graphics and drifting physics made it Atari's best-selling arcade game.

Kit's verdict · 8.6/10The inertia-based flying is still a joy, and nothing looks quite like vector lines. Kit · Sadkitty Games

Cheats & codes

No cheat codes

Asteroids doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.

Tips

Play it better

  1. Stay near the center and rotate to shoot instead of flying around, which keeps you away from screen-wrap surprises.
  2. Break one big rock at a time so the screen doesn't fill with fast small pieces.
  3. Your shots wrap around the screen, so you can hit things on the opposite edge.
  4. Small saucers are worth 1,000 points and aim at you, so kill them fast.
  5. Hyperspace can drop you inside a rock, so only use it as a last resort.
  6. Short thrust taps give you control, and long burns are hard to stop.

  • Atari built roughly 70,000 cabinets, making it the company's biggest coin-op hit.
  • Its popularity led Atari to cut production of Lunar Lander and use the cabinets for Asteroids.
