Years after his Greek rampage, Kratos lives quietly in the Norse wilds and sets out with his young son Atreus to scatter his late wife's ashes. The reboot swapped arcade combat for a heavy axe, a close camera and a story about being a father.
Kit's verdict · 9.3/10
A brutal series that grew up without losing any of its bite.Kit · Sadkitty Games
Loved
- Throwing and recalling the Leviathan Axe never gets old
- A moving father-and-son story
- Tough optional Valkyrie bosses
Not so much
- Too many reskinned trolls and enemies
- Gear and enchantment menus get fiddly
Play it if anyone who wants heavy, satisfying combat with a real story behind it.
Skip it if fans who only want the fast, bloody arcade style of the old games.

God of War doesn't have cheat codes. The tips and secrets below are the next best thing.
Tips
Play it better
- Throw the axe, then recall it so it hits enemies on the way back. It's free damage and stuns ranged foes.
- Spend Hacksilver on Atreus's bow and skills early. His arrows stun enemies and set up big combos.
- Find Frozen Flames to upgrade the Leviathan Axe. It's the biggest jump in power you'll get.
- Shield block and parry matter more than dodging, especially on harder difficulties.
- When Spartan Rage is full, save it for emergencies. It refills some health and makes you almost unstoppable.
- Revisit the Lake of Nine after story beats. The water level drops and opens new areas and side quests.
